MUAR: Police have freed 30 kindergarten children who were being held hostage by man with a hammer since Thursday morning, after shooting teargas into the kindergarten compound and entering the building in Sg Abong here.

The children have been taken to the hospital for a check up.

At 3.45pm, police shot teargas into the compound and entered the building.

Some 30 children and their teachers have been freed unharmed after being held hostage for several hours at their kindergarten in Malaysia.

Police used tear gas before storming the compound in a suburb of Muar town in Johor state.

The hostage-taker, reportedly armed with a hammer and machete, died later in hospital after being shot in the head, police said.

A similar incident last year led to schools being given safety advice.

"We have ended the hostage taking. The children and teachers are safe. The hostage-taker armed with a hammer and machete has been taken to a local hospital," one police officer told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

Johor deputy police chief Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman later said that the 40-year-old hostage-taker, who was in a critical condition with a head wound, had died.

Gun request

According to the newspaper, police shot tear gas before entering the building at around 1545 (0745 GMT).

It followed several hours of negotiations with the hostage-taker, while heavily-armed troops from the elite Special Actions Forces and ambulances stood nearby.

Early in the negotiations, the man - reported by local media to be mentally unstable - had threatened to kill the children if he was not given a gun, and had also asked for some food, the newspaper reported.

At one point the children were heard singing in what was believed to be an attempt to calm the man, Bernama news agency reported.

The father of a five-year-old told AFP that he was informed of the incident at about 1000 and was told the man was armed with both a hammer and a knife.

Anxious parents gathered around the police cordon as negotiations with the hostage-taker continued.

Last year a man barged into a kindergarten in the same district with a hammer and attacked three children.

Some 30 children and their teachers have been taken hostage at a kindergarten in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, police there say.

They have cordoned off the area and are negotiating with the hostage-taker.

He is reported to be armed with a hammer and a machete and to have moved the children and their teachers to the top of the two-floor building.

The Star newspaper reported that the man had told negotiators to give him a gun or he would kill the children.

He is believed to have entered the pre-school in a suburb of Muar town soon after the day had begun.

"We are still negotiating with the man to release the kindergarten children. He is holding about 30 children," local police chief Mohammad Nasir Ramli told the AFP news agency.

The father of one of the children told the AFP that he was informed of the incident at about 1000 (0200 GMT) and was told the man was armed with both a hammer and a knife.

"My five-year-old son is being held hostage. I am worried for his safety," he said.

Malaysia children, teachers in hostage crisis

MUAR, Malaysia — A man has taken some 30 pre-school children and four teachers hostage in southern Malaysia, police and parents said Thursday, as negotiators tried to end the stand-off.

The official news agency Bernama said the man was armed with a machete and a hammer.

"We are still negotiating with the man to release the kindergarten children. He is holding about 30 children," local police chief Mohammad Nasir Ramli told AFP.

The father of one of the children being held, 34-year-old Tan Teck Hock, said the hostage-taker was also holding four teachers at the school, in a suburb of Muar town in southern Johor state.

"My five-year-old son is being held hostage. I am worried for his safety," he told AFP.

"We were informed of the incident at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT)," he said.

Heavily armed police have surrounded the two-storey bungalow which houses the kindergarten and were trying to coax the hostage-taker to surrender and free the children.

Police said they had also brought in a dozen members of the elite Special Actions Forces from the capital Kuala Lumpur, who are trained for anti-terror operations and are skilled sharp-shooters.

Muar was also the scene in March last year of another kindergarten siege when a man armed with a hammer barged into a school and bludgeoned three six-year-olds who were left with head injuries.

Some 20 children at the school were eating breakfast when that attack happened. The 45-year-old kindergarten operator was also injured in the incident.

The New Straits Times newspaper said that the same man was responsible for both the March incident and the current hostage situation but police were not immediately able to confirm the report.

The Star newspaper said the man had told police negotiators to give him a gun or he would kill the children, but had appeared to calm down after speaking to a local psychiatrist and had now requested food.

Frustrated over the prolonged crisis, family members hvae begun shouting over the fence of the compound, appealing for the man to surrender.

The English-language daily said that two police trucks had rolled into the kindergarten compound and that two ambulances were on standby.

He told police negotiators to give him a gun or he would kill the kids.

However, after local psychiatrist Dr Lau Keen Lee spoke to the man from outside of the double-storey bungalow, he appeared to calm down.

"He is hungry now and wants some food," he said, adding that the man and the children were on the second floor.

While someone went to get the food, two Special Actions Forces (UTK) trucks rolled into the compound.

Meanwhile, Muar traffic police chief ASP Suhaimi Ahmad told anxious parents and members of the media to wait outside the compound of the bungalow.

He said that too many people milling about the compound might spook the man.

Meanwhile, UTK blocked the road leading to Pusat Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Seri Kids at around 2pm.

Crowds of people have gathered around the road. The suspect has locked all the doors in the two-storey bungalow.

Two ambulances are on standby outside the kindergarten.

Several police officers have been negotiating with the suspect.

There are still no reports of any children being harm or injured. The police have barricade the area.

The New Straits Times newspaper says at least one child has died. The Star says the man told negotiators to give him a gun or he would kill the children.
