All fly at <b>Pasir Gudang</b> Kite Festival - Latest - New Straits Times

Earlier, the ruler also welcomed the participants from 36 countries with a warm smile and handshake, after launching the event which will come to a close tomorrow (Feb 24).

The participants then proceeded to fly their kites of various shapes, sizes and colours, to the delight of the dignitaries and the crowd on this warm and windy afternoon.

State Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Hoo Seong Chang in his speech, said this was the first time the event was having the Asean School Kite competition.

Hoo said the competition attracted participants from Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, China and Malaysia.

Also present were Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

"Kite-flying is a recreation sport that enhances friendships," Hoo said, adding that the festival had won the Johor Tourism Award 2012 for "Best International Event".

The inaugural PGWKF in 1995, registered only 11 foreign  participants from  five countries.

The event this year recorded 236 participants from 36 countries which included new entries like Zambia, Colombia, Russia  and  Ukraine.'

Other participants are from Southeast Asia, East Asia, West Asia,  South Asia, Europe, North America, Australia,  New Zealand and Curacao.

The five categories included "The Most Creative Kite", "The Most Harmonious Kite  Decor", "The Dragon Kitie", "The Train Kite"  and "Rokkaku Challenge".

The event is jointly organised by the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council, Johor Tourism Department, Malaysian Kite Council and Johor Kite Association.
